Evidence for Inclusion in Wythe's Library

Listed in the Jefferson Inventory of Wythe's Library as [Law of] Obligations 8vo. and given by Thomas Jefferson to Dabney Carr. The Brown Bibliography[2] and George Wythe's Library[3] on LibraryThing both identify this work as The Law of Obligations and Conditions by. J.A. and incorrectly attributed to Thomas Ashe. The only edition was published in 1693. The Wolf Law Library followed these sources and purchased a copy of The Law of Obligations and Conditions.

Description of the Wolf Law Library's copy

Bound in contemporary paneled calf with raised bands and blind-stamped title to spine (gilding rubbed away). Board edges feature rubbed gilt tooling. Purchased from The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. with the George Wythe Boswell-Caracci Room Acquisition Fund.

Images of the library's copy of this book are available on Flickr. View the record for this book in William & Mary's online catalog.

References

  1. Sometimes incorrectly attributed to Thomas Ashe (c.1556-1618). Widely cited as Ashe's Law of Obligations and Conditions owing to a flourished "T.A." on the title page. Most legal bibliographies list the author as "J.A.", as signed on page A4, at the end of the introductory "Epistle." The books listed in the Table of Pleadings were printed five or six decades after Thomas Ashe's death in 1618.
