William Bunbury (1665 or 1666 – 1748) practiced for more than forty years, primarily at the Court of the Exchequer where he spent several years as the "senior barrister on the common law side of the court."[1] His reports represent notes he had taken and subsequently corrected. According to William Holdsworth, they were deemed authoritative in part, perhaps, due to the fact that they were "almost the only regular set of reports of cases decided in the court of Exchequer before ... 1796."[2]
Evidence for Inclusion in Wythe's Library
Ordered by Wythe from John Norton & Sons in a letter dated May 8, 1770. Records indicate the order was fulfilled.[3] later listed in the Jefferson Inventory of Wythe's Library as "Bunbury's reports. fol." and given by Thomas Jefferson to Dabney Carr.[4] All four of the Wythe Collection sources (Goodwin's pamphlet[5], Dean's Memo[6], Brown's Bibliography[7] and George Wythe's Library[8] on LibraryThing) list the first edition (1755), which was the edition purchased by the Wolf Law Library.
Description of the Wolf Law Library's copy
Backed in modern calf with marbled boards. Spine features six bands and perhaps the original brown morocco label with gilt lettering.
