Very little is known about the John Mallory who wrote ''Modern Entries in English''. As the title page indicates, he belonged to the [[wikipedia: Inner Temple|Inner Temple]]. Scholars acknowledge him as the author of at least two other books: ''The Attorney's Pocket Companion'', first published in 1733,<ref>John Mallory, ''The Attorney's Pocket Companion; or A Guide to the Practisers of the the Law'' (London, in the Savoy: Printed by E. and R. Nutt, and R. Gosling, 1733). Linked to the author of ''Modern Entries in English'' in William Holdsworth, ''A History of English Law'' (London: Methuen & Co., Sweet and Maxwell, 1938), 11:359.</ref> and ''Quare Impedit'', originally produced in 1737.<ref>John Mallory, ''Quare Impedit'' (London: Printed by E. and R. Nutt, 1737). Listed as volume three of ''Modern Entries'' in ''Sweet & Maxwell's Legal Bibliography of the British Commonwealth'' comp. W. Harold Maxwell and Leslie F. Maxwell, 2nd ed. Bound in contemporary calf with blind rules to boards and blind fillets along joints. Spines feature raised bands; volume one includes label with gilt lettering and rules; label missing from volume two. Early owner signature (of William Margetts) to both front pastedowns and occasional annotations in his hand appear on title page and in volumes. Purchased from the Lawbook Exchange with the [[:Category:George Wythe Boswell-Caracci Room Acquisition Fund|George Wythe Boswell-Caracci Room Acquisition Fund]].
