Clüver was born in Danzig (Gdańsk), in Royal Prussia, a province of the Kingdom of Poland. After spending some time at the Polish court of Sigismund III Vasa, he began the study of law at the University of Leiden (Dutch Republic), but soon he turned his attention to history and geography, which were then taught there by Joseph Scaliger.[1] His life's project, it developed, was a general study of the geography of Antiquity, based not only on classical literary sources, but — and this was his contribution — supplemented by wide travels and local inspections. He became virtually the founder of historical geography.

Evidence for Inclusion in Wythe's Library

Listed in the Jefferson Inventory of Wythe's Library as Cluverii geographia. p. f. and given by Thomas Jefferson to his grandson Thomas Jefferson Randolph. The Brown Bibliography[2] lists the 1659 edition published in Amersterdam based on the copy Jefferson sold to the Library of Congress.[3] Unfortunately, that copy no longer exists and may not have been the one Jefferson gave to his grandson. George Wythe's Library[4] on LibraryThing states "Perhaps only a portion of this work. Precise edition unknown."

Since we have no way of knowing which edition Wythe owned, Wolf Law Library purchased an available copy of an edition published in Amsterdam in 1651.
