Hughes was more of a translator and compiler of legal works than a reporter of cases in the strictest sense. His first published work was The Parson's Law (1641). On 25 September 1645 the Stationers' Company records an entry for The Mirror of Justice … Translated out of the Old French into English by William Hughes of Gray's Inn. Other works followed in the 1650s, including Reports of Certain Cases … Reviewed … by … Justice Godbolt, published by Hughes in 1652. The Commentaries upon Original Writs, which produced the original writs from the books, duly edited, was published in 1655.
