This notebook lists the electors that were present and voted for President and Vice-President of the United States at the 1804 College of Electors. Thomas Jefferson won the [[Wikipedia:United States presidential election, 1804|1804 US Presidential Election]] with a 162 electoral college votes. His opponent, [[Wikipedia:Charles Pinckney|Charles Pinckney]] of South Carolina won 14 electoral college votes. [[George Wythe]], an elector in 1804, was also selected as an Electoral College elector in 1800. The notebook was looted in Richmond in 1865 during the Civil War by a Union soldier. of  the  Senate  of  the  United  States at  the  city of  Washington,  one of  the  said 
 
certificates• and,  having  prepared  tickets  for that ;purpose, and deposited the  same in  the 
 
ballot box, Measr: Robert  Taylor, Hugh Nelson and Archibald  Stuart were  appointed a Committee to
 
examine the ballot, and report to the  College on whom  a majority of  votes  had fallena: who,
 
having  accordingly examined the  same at  the  Clerk's table, Mr. Taylor reported that  the 
 
Committee, on such  examination, had found  a madority  of votes  in  favor  of  Colo. Alexander 
 
Smyth.
 
An appointment  in  writing, being  thereupon prepared, was signed  by all the  members, and
 
ordered  to be delivered to the  said  Alexander  Smyth, together with  the  certificate.

Ordered  that Theodosiue  Hansford, Clerk  to the  College, be  allowed  the sum of  thirty
 
dollare, for  his  services during  the  session of  the  CollegeI and that the  sane  be
 
certified to the  Executive  of  this State for  payment.
